Bedbugs are common house guests that are highly unwelcome. If you observe good precautionary measures, then you may not experience an attack. However, since these bugs cling on clothes, luggage and shoes, you will not know when or whom they will accompany. Below are effective measures of preventing a bedbug infestation in your home.

After Your Trip

Bedbugs are transported from one place to the other mostly by humans and pets. This adaptation is the reason why motels are top culprits for spreading the bugs. Remember that bedbugs are not only found in dirty hotels or motels, but they can also thrive even in the seven star, spotless clean hotels.

The best safety precaution you can observe is to wash your clothes in hot water after your trip. Also, don't unpack your belongings in your bedroom, preferably do it on the verandah or balcony and wash the area after unpacking. Also, when booking a hotel room, inquire whether the hotel has bedbug control services in place. Always opt for a hotel that inspects and prevents bedbug infestation.

Mattress Protection

Bedbugs love hiding in mattresses mainly because they feed at night. However, unlike mosquitoes, bedbugs are extremely discreet, and it might take you months to know what is biting you. However, you can suspect their presence if you develop itchy pimples similar to mosquito bites, but ones that feel worse and take longer to heal.

Thoroughly inspect your mattress for the bedbugs. You'll either see them or their fecal excrete—small, dark spots—along your mattress seams and folds. One way of treating your mattress is having an approved mattress encasement fitted on your mattress. Consult a certified pest control service provider, and inquire about the best way forward. Often, an insecticide will be applied and zipped in the encasement for about one year.

Crevices and Cracks Inspection

Bedbugs love hiding in dark places, and this makes crevices and cracks a favorite spot. Inspect your furniture and any crevices on the walls and floors. A regular all-purpose spray cleaner will come in handy in killing bedbugs. So, get in the habit of cleaning open cracks with an all-purpose cleaner so as to kill any one or two bedbugs that may present.

In the case of an infestation, you will notice that the bugs nearly overrun your home and they will be present in almost all crevices and beds. The best solution in this case is to hire a professional exterminator to fumigate the entire house. Also, buy an appropriate sealant for your furniture and walls and seal the cracks after fumigation.

Observe safety precautions necessary to keep bedbugs off your home. Bedbugs bite and are exceptionally hard to control, especially if you don't know what should be done and how to do it.
